Frozen...

The days are short
The sun a spark
Hung thin between
The dark and dark.
~John Updike

"I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently?
And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt;
and perhaps it says "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again."
Lewis Carroll

We took a drive through the snow covered country side.
Boy, it is so cold out there!
The wind is blowing and drifts are everywhere.
Here in Indiana we are not used to such cold winters.
Reminds me of the years I lived in Northeast Michigan.

Panaderia El Sol

This mexican bakery is not far from our house.
They have lots of delicious goodies to select from.
My favorite are the churros.
On Saturday they make tamales, they are soooo good!
Also love the real Coca Cola they sell there in glass bottles.
Thanks to the owner, Maribel, for letting me take these photos.

Enjoy your Sunday!

Standing Invitation

 The arrival of invited guests marks the
beginning of a long-awaited season.
Amidst noisy congeniality and rowdy arguments
by those long-remembered for such rude behavior,
they're warmly welcomed with
interest and absorption in their familiar presence.
Our seedy invitation is an open one, extended with excitement.
They come, in flocks and droves, singly and in family groups--
zooming down with exact precision:
amazingly able to zero in on remembered locations.
Winter has arrived!
Welcome, our fine-feathered friends.
Spread your wings . . . make yourself at home.

Enjoy your Sunday!

We survived the extreme cold weather.
Finally temps are rising and the sun is shining.

Fair is the sky, for the cloud-rack is lifted--
Bright will the day be, though dark was the morn;
Warm was the morn, but the strong wind has shifted
Into the north--where the blizzards are born.
White coward mercury goes down to zero--
Darting about flies a veteran jay,
Braving the breeze, like a blue-coated hero--
Seeking his supper, I venture to say.

Neighbors pass hurriedly, mantled and muffled--
Great coats, and seal-skins, to keep out the storm--
Plump little quail, with their plumage beruffled,
Search in the hedge for a nook that is warm.
That latest blast from the boreal bellows,
Drifted some snow-birds the garden below;
Always their coming, the wise-acres tell us,
Tokens cold weather, and flurries of snow.

Warm sheltered corners the cattle have chosen,
Shivers the pine in its evergreen leaves;
Pools by the roadside in wrinkles are frozen--
Bayonet icicles hang from the eaves.
Five English sparrows, defying the weather,
There in the pathway a conference hold;
Ho! merry midgets in doublets of feathers!
Why do you rally out there in the cold?

Little you care for the riot and rattle--
Little you heed--let the mercury fall!
Brave little fighters, go on with your battle--
Here is a friend who will welcome you all!
Fly to my window--I'll feed every comer--
Hail to the comrades that constancy show
Loving and loyal, in winter and summer--
With us, alike, in the heat and the snow!

Brrrrr, it's cold out there!

Hi there,

We are getting lots of snow right now, up to a foot today, and then it will get brutally cold, with temps as low as minus 60 Fahrenheit windchill (-50 Celsius).
It hasn't been that cold around here since the early 1900's.
Hope the power will stay on.

Just filled up all the bird feeders.
Thinking of all the animals outside.

Stay warm and safe everyone who is in the path of this storm!

P. S. Went to the library yesterday and stocked up on lots of reading material.
Book I am reading right now is "Ghana Must Go" by Taiye Selasi.
