Lucy Lu

Here is our big surprise. We named her Lucy. She has been too long at the Almost Home Humane Society, thank goodness it is a no kill shelter. She was picked up by Animal Control early December on a busy road. Now who would let a beautiful baby like her go? She did not have too many people looking at her, until I checked their website and the rest is history. Lucy found her forever home! ~

She is about four years old and gets along fine with our Rat Terrier Gracie, who was also rescued from the same shelter a little over four years ago.

So now we are owned by two little dogs.

I often stop to think about,
What my dog had went through.
She was adopted at the shelter,
And where she came from, no one knew.
You see, one can’t help but wonder,
Was she treated right?
Did she have a warm place to sleep,
Or was she kept outside all night?
Were there nights she went hungry?
I can’t imagine someone treating her wrong.
I wonder if she went without food,
I always pray it wasn’t too long.
Was she somebody’s best friend?
Did she get lost one day?
It’s just a question that I think sometimes,
If she could talk what would she say?
I know what she’d tell you now,
And it would put a smile on your face.
She’d tell you that she’s found her home,
And she’s happy in this place.
She’d also remind us, to remember,
That even though we may never find out,
The dog will always be grateful to you,
And that’s something you don’t have to doubt.

Fun in the snow

We had a great day yesterday. Despite the cold temps we went for a walk and watched the kids sled. Then we were off to our favorite vintage stores for some browsing and a restaurant for dinner.

The other night we went for a nice little walk through town. We stopped at Riverside Skating Center and had fun watching the skaters. It was a warm evening so we stayed a while so that I could shoot some pics. It's not that easy to catch anything in motion. I need more practice.

Winter Berries...

Yesterday I went to my favorite flower shop "Rubia" and purchased these winter berries. I love the bright red color. They were busy at the shop preparing Christmas bouquets. What caught my eye were two-colored pink tulips with cedar - so beautiful.

Christkindlmarket Chicago

We had a great time at the Christkindlmarket in Chicago. Lots of vendors from Germany. The stand we enjoyed the most was the glassblowers from Zwiesel, Bavaria. My friend Sabina and I loved talking to our fellow Bavarians.

Also had lots of german food, like Leberkaes, potato pancakes, Curry Wurst and Bratwurst and gebrannte Mandeln. And it was sooooo good! And of course we had to have some Gluehwein.

Apple Orchard

The weather is still nice, so we took a trip to the apple orchard. Had a great time there. Tasted hot cider and different kinds of apple butter and took a variety of apples home and they are yummy!

We went to the Pumpkin Patch on Saturday. It was a beautiful day, lots of people looking for that special Jack-O-Lantern. Kids had the most fun, especially getting a ride around the farm.

It's the last vegetable harvest this season from my container garden. It was a bit chilly last night, so the only thing left outside are my herbs.

It looks like the Hummingbirds are getting ready to fly south.... I hate to see summer go....

The little songs of summer are all gone today.
The little insect instruments are all packed away:
The bumblebee's snare drum, the grasshopper's guitar,
The katydid's banjo, the cricket's violin,
The dragonfly's cello have ceased their merry din.

My friend Anna-Mari sent me these beautiful pieces of art. I love her photography, it is amazing. Besides that, she is pretty crafty at many other things, like knitting and sewing. She has two blogs and two Etsy stores. One where she sells her artwork and the other where she sells her Mom's and Grandma's beautiful knitting. I own a gorgeous scarf made by her grandmother and two pairs of warm socks.

My friend Sabina prepared these yummies for us on my recent visit to North Carolina. We had a great time, after many years of not having seen each other. Just picked up our friendship and enjoyed each other's company. I guess that is what true friendship is all about, to be there for one another... I hope she and her daughter come for a visit before Christmas, so that we can go to Chicago to the Christkindl market.

On a recent trip to North Carolina to visit my friend Sabina, we discovered this vintage store. Lots of stuff was packed in there. This place would be something for the "American Pickers".

Early Morning in Chinatown

Nine Dragon Wall

Chinatown in Chicago is a very busy place on a Saturday morning. Lots of hustling and bustling.

We love visiting there, always new things to discover.

Chicago is a great city with a beautiful skyline and so many quaint ethnic neighborhoods.

If you are looking for a place to visit, put Chicago on your list. You will not be disappointed.

Teahouse

On our recent visit to Chicago we stopped by Chinatown. Tried out Saint's Alp Teahouse. I LOVE their passion fruit green tea. They also have lots of varieties of taiwanese bubble tea. And the food is pretty tasty, too.

The first Saint's Alp was founded in Hong Kong.

We are very busy at work. It is the end of the summer semester and the fall semester starts on the 22nd. I will not have much time for posting, but will try and visit all your blogs soon.

Lincoln Square

Very dog friendly, I like that.

This is where I would love to live, right off the square.

The minute you step into Lincoln Square, is like being back home in Germany. Nostalgia takes over. We visitited the famous Merz Apotheke, the Chicago Brauhaus, and Gene's Sausage Shop & Delicatessen with its roof top wine and beer garden. To me it felt like strolling in my home town, couldn't get enough of it. Have to go back there, soon.

Listened to the german band at the Brauhaus play some bavarian music for me, while enjoying a big Brezn and a Weizn. Strolled into the Merz Apotheke with its wonderful aromas and couldn't get enough of all the goodies at the Delicatessen.

~ ~ ~

We had a wonderful afternoon. The square even has a fountain at its center, where something seems to be going on every weekend. Have to go back there, so much more to see. Want to visit the book store and second hand shops, just ran out of time.

Sadly enough, most Germans moved out of the area, to the suburbs, but the flair still remains.

A Summer Give-Away

The Colors of Summer

We had dinner at Scotty's Brewhouse.

Dessert was to "die" for, it is called "Death by Brownie". It's a rich chocolate brownie, topped with vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, and whipped cream. No one person could eat all that alone!

Saw these big birds at the mall in Primm, Nevada, at the state line to California. Outlet shopping galore there.

What I am reading right now: "The Blindness of the Heart" by Julia Franck. The quote by The Guardian says it all: "Disturbing, original, and brilliant."

Hairdresser, a trip to the library, and some retail therapy are on my list for Saturday.

On Sunday, a lounge chair on my patio with a book, sounds good to me.

We had a wonderful dinner at my favorite restaurant Maza and the best dessert I have ever tasted, Ashta Bil Asal.

Strawberry Soup

Last week, when we were having a heat wave, I tried out this strawberry soup. I saw the recipe in a health magazine we get at work. Try it, it's delicious and so easy to prepare.

2 1/2 cups fresh or frozen strawberries

2 cups plain, low-fat yogurt

1/2 cup orange juice

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup water

Blend strawberries in blender until smooth. Slowly add yogurt. Keep blending.

Pour mixture into large bowl. Add orange juice, sugar, and water.

Stir until blended.

Chill in refrigerator for at least 1 hour.

Serves 4: 216 calories, 2.4 g fat

(1.2 g saturated fat), 7.4 mg cholsterol,

87.6 mg sodium, 43.4 g carbohydrate,

7.2 g protein.

Rock Climbing at Calico Basin

We met two girls from Berlin, Germany, climbing. They took a whole year off, travelling the world climbing. Good luck to them, wherever they are today.

California Dreaming

Well, this time we finally made it to California. Always wanted to go there. Only 35 miles from Las Vegas.

Desert Flora

It's so beautiful to see the desert in bloom.

Went to a fantastic Restaurant last night called Maza. Delicious food and excellent service.For dessert we had Ashta Bil Asal, it is so yummy!...We think it might become our fav place to dine.

I am working a condensed work week for the next two months, starting next week and will have Mondays off. I love 3-day weekends!

Calico Basin

Petroglyphs

As promised, here are more pics from our vacation.

The Calico Basin is a beautiful place. Three springs feed this area and it feels like an oasis. Lots of birds and other wildlife.

The Strip

The Strip - That's where it's happening - Entertainment galore - daytime or nighttime.

If you have never been there, go and see it. You don't have to be a gambler to enjoy it. Lots of things to do and see away from The Strip...Hoover Dam, the desert, museums, state parks, Grand Canyon and so much more...(I sound like a trave agent!).

I never wanted to go to Las Vegas, thought, like so many, nothing but a gambling paradise. And then finally we went out there and I am hooked. I love the weather (300 days of sunshine per year, can't beat that!) and the desert.

What is your favorite vacation spot?

This is Memorial Day weekend in the US and we have a day off on Monday!!! We don't get too many holidays around here. We'll have a few guests and a cook-out. Any plans for Monday, my american blogger friends?

Looking forward to a High School graduation party tomorrow. Hopefully our weather will improve, nothing but rain and rain and more rain since April.

After hiking all morning at the Calico Basin, we found this unique asian diner in Summerlin. A wonderful place where one can experience the flavors from five different countries. We love asian food!... My salad was so yummy and the beer, mmmh (sueffig)!

Red Rock Canyon

Just minutes from Las Vegas is Red Rock Canyon. It is a beautiful and impressive place. We went hiking there. Need to have lots of water with you when you go. Very low humidity (only 5%) and suncreen is needed. It is hot out there. The desert was just starting to bloom.

If you have never been there, plan to visit!

Fabulous Las Vegas

We are back from our trip. Had a great time, much needed relaxation. The weather was fabulous!

Finally did the tourist "thing" and went to the famous sign at the south end of the Strip. Big Bird was nice and friendly, but Elvis was in no mood to turn around for a photo. I like his pink Cadillac, though.

These days we have many "visitors" on our porch. Young chipmunks playfully chasing each other and birds fighting for a spot on the feeder. Always busy out there.

The weather has not been too nice so far. A few warm days with sunshine, but mainly cold and rain.

Lots of heavy thunderstorms today with hail and tornado warnings.

I bought quite a few flowers already and I need to get them planted quickly.

And soon we will be going on vacation. I can't wait to see the desert in bloom again and go horseback riding through the canyons.

It was my son's birthday and we went to Olive Garden to celebrate. We had a great time and it was extra special because my nephew and his girlfriend were here from Germany to celebrate with us.

Welcome to theTriple XXX Family Restaurant, Route 66 Diner. It is located just a few steps away from Purdue University. It was first opened back in 1929 and was a drive-in. Now it is a dine in only, with lots of 1950's diner charm and character. It was even featured on the Food Network TV channel.

I love Rubia Flower Market, reminds me of the many "Holland Flower" stores in Germany. Always fresh cut flowers at very economical prices. I go there every week and love browsing for my weekly bouquet. My friend Kelly, on the pic above, was so nice and let me take all these photos. Thanks Kelly!

Meet the artist Mark Strauss.

On our vacation last fall we visited Mark Strauss' wonderful gallery in Edinburg, Virginia. Housed in a beautiful old building, the gallery features all of Mark Strauss' prints and many of his paintings. And to our surprise, the person at the desk was the artist himself. He is a remarkable person and his paintings are fascinating. We enjoyed talking to him very much.

His paintings and prints are owned by patrons throughout the United States and the world.

If you are ever in the area please visit his gallery. It is located in the center of Edinburg at 108 North Main Street on State Route 11 and take a tour conducted by the artist. You also might want to check out his website. The gallery is open from Wednesday through Sunday.

Blizzard Dog

Had to get the heavy duty fleece coat out for Gracie. She is standing on top of 10 inches of frozen sleet and ice, try to shovel that, it is nearly impossible...That blizzard just about closed the whole city...so I was home for two days and it was nice...got caught up on many things...I hope this is the last snow storm of the season. I want spring!...

When we vacationed in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia last November we came across the

Shenandoah Farm Market. What a wonderful place. They have year-round fresh local produce and follow natural sustainable earth friendly practices. They take pride in their unique little store. It is owned by Allen and Debbie Sinclair and operated with the help of excellent personalized service staff.

They are located on Orkney Grade in Mount Jackson. If you are in the area stop by and browse. They also feature many items from different local artists. A wonderful and unique place.

Panera

We had lunch at Panera Bread. With it being so cold, soup and sandwich was just what we needed. Trying to continue to eat really healthy this year, so Panera was just right, with it being the healthiest fast food Restaurant in the US. Try it, if you have never been there. They also have a fantastic breakfast menu (spinach souffle) and their coffee is delicious. You also might want to take home some of their bagels, they are very yummy.

We received at least 4 inches of snow today and by the end of the week the temperatures will go down way below zero Fahrenheit. Brrrrr....

Serenity.....(at Hollywood Beach)

On our vacation in December to Florida we spent a late afternoon/evening at the famous Broadwalk in Hollywood. It is one of the best beaches in the country. The promenade stretches for more than two miles and there is something there for everyone. We had a wonderful greek meal at one of the many beachside restaurants there and this was our view.

Winter Wonderland

It snowed all day yesterday and all through the night. We received another 5 inches of snow. It was all fluffy and light and looked so pretty on the trees. So I went outside in the morning and snapped these photos before it all came off the branches.

The fourth candle is lit

Today we lit the fouth candle on our Avent wreath. I love this wreath, I received it from my friend Kay. Have a look at her blog and her beautiful decorated house. I hope to meet her one day.

I also received a vase from her for forcing flower bulbs. I was very lucky to find a few more vases at a local gardening store and the bulbs are cooling in the refrigerator. If everything goes well, I will be showing you some photos of my flowering hyacinths next year.

Vacation to Florida and the Bahamas

Hello everyone! We are back from our second vacation and we had a great time. We left when it was very cold and during a snow storm. Started out an hour late, because the plane needed to be de-iced. Got to Ft. Lauderdale and it was 81 degrees Fahrenheit. Cannot beat that, to wear summer clothes in December. I could get used to that very easily. I love sunshine!

Avocado Love...

Peaceful Greens

A wonderful vegetarian/vegan Restaurant has opened on Main Street in downtown Lafayette, it is called "Peaceful Greens". The food is very delicious. The owner, Tina (picture above), uses as many local and organic foods as possible. I had ordered the "Rastapher Pasta", see the above picture, it is a blend of whole wheat & veggie pasta spirals with grape tomatoes, bell peppers, black olives, kale & artichoke hearts drizzled with lemon & basil pesto. It came with a slice of Dakota (vegan) bread from Great Harvest Bakery. It was very yummy.

I also had the "Shaden's Lunchbox" smoothie made from blueberries, banana, peanut butter, orange juice, soy milk, soy yogurt, and spinach. And it sure was the most awesome smoothie ever!

Everything is made from scratch. - An awesome place and I will have to try all the other fantastic items on the menu.

I went to the local artists fair a few weeks ago. What especially caught my eye were the "kitchen robots" by Donna Leuck. To quote her: "I love taking discarded things and make them into something with new purpose." Her robots are 95% recycled. No two pieces of trash are alike, therefore her pieces are one of a kind.

Meet Miss Gracie

Here are a few more pics of Gracie, the Rat Terrier, enjoying the sunshine.

We rescued her almost three years ago from the Almost Home Humane Society.

They found her starving, covered in fleas and dog bites, and having recently had a litter.

I do not know what happened to the puppies.

They had named her "Pearl" and that is her middle name now.

The day I went to the shelter was the same day she was returned from Foster Care and the rest is history.

We celebrate her rescue date as her Birthday.

Goodies from Panera

I went to Panera and got some Asiago cheese bagels for Sunday brunch. They are my favorite, but they are not as good as the cheese bagels I used to get at Lisa's Bagel Factory in Alpena, Michigan.

Food Glorious Food

Here are a few of my favorite dishes and yes, they are either vegetarian or vegan. I don 't care much for meat. All of them were prepared by me and most of the vegetables are from our container garden, organically grown. My absolute favorite is the Tabouleh. I make a big bowl of it so that there is enough to last for a few days.

My Flower Garden

I love summer flowers, they make me happy. All these pics are from my flower garden. I spend quite a bit of time there every day, dead heading, fertilizing, and watering, especially right now with it being so hot and humid, my flowers are asking for lots of water.

Indiana Bridges

This one was kind of scary...suspended from these steel cables only, quite a lot of movement when crossing it, but very beautiful...

We went for a ride on Sunday afternoon and re-discovered these fabulous bridges. They are so beautiful.

We went to Indy again last Monday to Trader Joe's (love all the organics there), Panera, and Stein Mart (I got a new purse)...some of my fav stores...we ate at a new little greek restaurant right next to Stein Mart on 86th Street, it was delicious...

At the Garden Center

It was a warm, but rainy day today...I went to the garden center to get vegetable plants, herbs, and more flowers to plant...lots of people had the same idea...

And I also went to my favorite store T.J.Maxx and yes, I am a Maxxinista...

I am reading Toni Morrison's "A Mercy" right now, an amazing book...

My yellow corner and old dresser

I love these heart tins I got them and the lamp at a store in Alpena, Michigan, where I used to live. The soap was a gift from my friend Diana. The candlestick I found locally.

The dresser is old (1920's or 1930's) and needs to be refurbished. There is also a mirror that goes with it (needs lots of work, though). Both pieces were made by Showers Furniture in Bloomington, Indiana. My husband bought it at an antique store there.

I like its deep drawers, fits lots of stuff...

It's going to be another busy week for me...hope you have a good one!

Last weekend I went to the Leaping Leopard, an amazing Antique & Collectables store...many nice things there...made a little purchase for someone I know in the Netherlands...

Love Andrea's "Mushroom Pin Cushion"...and her chicks and bunnies are so cute...have a look...

Indian Food

I love vegetarian Indian food. These are some of the ingredients I needed to make a "Dal", one of my favorites. Luckily we have many asian markets in town and I have quite a few indian friends. They are always helpful when I have questions. Thank you Malathi, Roopa, Alka, and Vyju.

We also have an Indian Take Out place in town, it is called Shaukin and they deliver Tiffin whenever we feel like it at work. Their food is delicious! My all-time favorite is Palak Paneer, it is so good. And my favorite dessert is Shrikhand.
